Playing Count Orlok wasn’t just about the look. Skarsgård worked on his voice and body language to portray the eerie, undead sorcerer convincingly. However, the actor admitted to being nervous. “I was terrified that the character might seem fake or forced,” he explained.
The prosthetic makeup was designed to give Orlok a skeletal, undead appearance, with hollow cheeks and a haunting mustache. Director Robert Eggers wanted Orlok to appear as more than just a vampire—he envisioned an ancient, magical being.
Despite the challenges, Skarsgård’s efforts paid off. The final look and performance were praised, and the actor felt relieved once the director approved his portrayal. “Everything came together perfectly in the end,” he said.
Nosferatu explores themes of fear, transformation, and immortality, and Skarsgård’s dedication to his character brought a unique edge to this reimagined classic.
