Mindy Kaling, best known for her role as Kelly Kapoor on The Office, recently revealed that she feels more connected to Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, rather than her own character on the show. The actress shared this sweet and unexpected connection during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.

Mindy Kaling Channels Michael Scott
In the interview, Mindy Kaling reflected on a memorable scene from The Office. A young Michael Scott, when asked what he wanted to do when he grew up, replied, “I wanna have 100 kids so I can have 100 friends and no one can say no to being my friend.”
At the time, Mindy Kaling, who was 25 and helped write the scene, found the line funny and a little sad. She shared, “I thought, ‘Oh, that’s so ridiculous. Who would think that way?’” Fast forward to now, as a mother of three, Mindy admits she relates deeply to Michael’s sentiment.
“I can’t wait until my daughters grow older so they can be my pals,” she said with a laugh. She also joked about saving her glamorous red-carpet gowns for her daughters, imagining them wearing the outfits in the future.
Mindy is a mother to two daughters, Katherine (6) and Anne (10 months), and a son, Spencer (4). As her kids grow, she finds herself cherishing moments with them and looking forward to bonding with them as adults.
“I used to think, ‘Why keep these dresses? I’ll never wear them again.’ Now, I’m holding onto them for my daughters. I can already picture them being annoyed that I didn’t save enough!”
Kaling’s revelation is a touching reminder of how our perspectives change with time and experiences. As a parent, she now finds humor and warmth in Michael Scott’s quirks, embracing the role of a loving, albeit slightly comedic, parent.
