The actor was born in Uvalde, Texas, a small town with only 12,000 residents. However, Matthew McConaughey family had to move in 1979 because the town was growing. McConaughey recalled that the town’s population increased after a Wendy’s fast food restaurant opened there. Despite leaving Uvalde, the family continued to face financial difficulties.

His father worked several jobs, including being a truck driver, running a gas station, and eventually selling pipes. McConaughey explained that his father was doing everything he could to avoid bankruptcy, but they managed to survive through it all.

McConaughey said that his mom was very strict, but she also supported him and his siblings in a unique way. “She was the school teacher who would actually come home and go, ‘check it out, here’s the answers to the test,’” he said. “She was rebellious and didn’t agree with the standard curriculum.”
Despite these challenges, McConaughey remembered his parents fondly and described them as “real good trouble.” He said they were “outlaws” and a resilient family who stuck together. McConaughey also mentioned how their experiences helped shape his character and work ethic.
