Ariana Grande Teases Glinda-Elphaba Romance
In an interview with Gay Times, Erivo explained that her character, Elphaba, is a bold and free-spirited woman who doesn’t care about traditional norms when it comes to love. She added that there’s nothing wrong with fans interpreting the deep connection between Glinda and Elphaba as romantic.
Ariana Grande agreed, saying that the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba is special because they are each other’s safe space. She hinted at the possibility that Glinda could be exploring her own feelings, saying, “Glinda might be a little in the closet. You never know! Give it a little more time.”
In the film, which is based on the Broadway musical Wicked, the characters of Glinda and Elphaba start as rivals but develop a strong friendship. While the first part of the movie shows Glinda having feelings for Prince Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, the deeper connection between Glinda and Elphaba is a topic of interest for fans.
Erivo also shared in a separate interview that she hopes LGBTQ+ viewers will connect with Elphaba’s story, as the character experiences the pain of feeling like an outsider. She expressed that Elphaba’s journey is about finding self-acceptance, something many queer people can relate to.
Ariana Grande also commented that Oz, the magical world where Wicked takes place, is a very “queer place.” She and Erivo hope the movie will send a positive and empowering message to the LGBTQ+ community.
Wicked is being released in two parts, with the first part now in theaters. Fans can watch the story unfold as it explores themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery.
