Ridley Scott, the iconic filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning Gladiator, made an unexpected casting decision for its much-anticipated sequel. He chose Paul Mescal to play Lucius, the grown-up nephew of Commodus, after being deeply impressed by Mescal’s performance in the TV series Normal People. In the series, Mescal portrayed Connell with emotional depth and vulnerability, which Scott found captivating. Jokingly, Scott said, “That’s my guy for rolling around in the sand,” referring to Mescal’s dedication to his craft.
Paul Mescal Joins Ridley Scott Gladiator II
Gladiator II picks up more than 20 years after the original film. Lucius is now an adult, grappling with his identity and seeking revenge, all while navigating the political and personal chaos of ancient Rome. Mescal’s character must honor the legacy of Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the first film) while forging his own path.
Speaking about the role, Mescal shared, “It’s surreal to be part of something that shaped cinema. Lucius has a complex journey, balancing his reverence for Maximus with his own desires and choices.”

The sequel boasts an impressive cast, including Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. Pascal plays a powerful Roman general, while Washington takes on the role of Macrinus, a wealthy former gladiator-turned-political leader. Their performances are expected to add new dimensions to the story.
Ridley Scott’s attention to detail is evident in the film’s production. The sets recreate ancient Rome with remarkable authenticity, giving actors like Mescal a fully immersive environment to perform in. According to Mescal, “Ridley creates worlds that leave little to the imagination—you feel like you’re truly in ancient Rome.”
The sequel promises to deliver not only large-scale battles, including naval warfare and unique encounters like a fight with baboons, but also deeply emotional character arcs.
For Mescal, stepping into this role is both exciting and daunting. “You’re stepping into history—both cinematic and ancient—and there’s no way to take it lightly,” he admitted. With Scott’s meticulous direction and a stellar cast, Gladiator II aims to live up to its predecessor’s towering legacy.
The film is set to hit theaters in 2024, blending epic action with emotional storytelling, making it a must-watch for fans of the original.
