He chose Paul Mescal to play Lucius, the grown-up nephew of Commodus, after being deeply impressed by Mescal’s performance in the TV series Normal People. In the series, Mescal portrayed Connell with emotional depth and vulnerability, which Scott found captivating. Jokingly, Scott said, “That’s my guy for rolling around in the sand,” referring to Mescal’s dedication to his craft.

Gladiator II picks up more than 20 years after the original film. Lucius is now an adult, grappling with his identity and seeking revenge, all while navigating the political and personal chaos of ancient Rome. Speaking about the role, Mescal shared, “It’s surreal to be part of something that shaped cinema. Lucius has a complex journey, balancing his reverence for Maximus with his own desires and choices.”
