Mariah Carey Likely to Win Copyright Lawsuit Over "All I Want for Christmas Is You"

A judge in California is expected to rule in favor of Mariah Carey in a lawsuit that claims her hit Christmas song, All I Want for Christmas Is You, copied another song. The lawsuit was filed by an artist named Vince Vance, who says that Mariah’s song is too similar to his track from 1989, which has the same title.

Mariah Carey Likely to Win Lawsuit

The case first started in 2022 when Vance, whose real name is Andy Stone, accused Carey of taking his idea. He originally asked for $20 million in damages but dropped the case later that year. However, in 2023, he refilled the lawsuit, adding more details and a co-plaintiff, Troy Powers, who helped write Vance’s original song.

Vance’s team argued that Mariah’s song copied several elements of their track. They said the melody and lyrics were too alike. However, Carey’s team denied these claims, stating that the similarities were just common Christmas themes and words that are in the public domain, like “Santa Claus” and “mistletoe.”

The judge overseeing the case, Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani, has shown that she is likely to dismiss the lawsuit, agreeing with Carey’s defense. She is also considering whether to impose a penalty on Vance for filing a frivolous case.

Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You was released in 1994 and has since become one of the most popular Christmas songs ever. It has topped music charts every holiday season, making it a beloved classic.

As of now, the case is still ongoing, but it looks like Mariah Carey may be winning this legal battle.
