Vasan Bala Accepts Responsibility for Alia Bhatt's Film Jigra's Poor Box Office Performance

Director Vasan Bala has publicly accepted responsibility for the disappointing box office performance of his film, Jigra, which stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina. In a recent interview, he expressed surprise at the film’s underperformance, especially since Alia is a well-loved actress. He noted that something was missing that failed to draw audiences to the theaters.

Vasan Bala on Jigra’s Failure

Vasan Bala acknowledged that he is in charge of ensuring a film’s success and admitted that he needs to analyze why viewers stayed away from Jigra. He stated, “Something has happened where people have stayed away; something they didn’t feel the need to come to the theater.” He highlighted the importance of making the film worth the audience’s time and investment.

In an earlier discussion, Vasan described Jigra as a straightforward film with universally relatable emotions. However, he admitted to disappointing both producers Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt, emphasizing that no one aims to make a failed film.

Following the criticism, Vasan deactivated his social media account after being labeled ‘arrogant’ for defending the film rather than simply accepting its failure. Jigra, which is based on a jailbreak theme, tells the story of an overprotective sister, Satya, who does everything possible to save her brother, Ankur, from a life sentence abroad.

Despite releasing on October 11, 2024, and having no significant competition at the box office, Jigra only managed to collect Rs 22 crore in its first week. The film’s lackluster performance has sparked discussions among fans and critics alike.
