In a recent interview, Samantha Cohen, one of Queen Elizabeth’s trusted aides, shared some personal stories about the late queen. She worked closely with the queen for nearly 18 years, up until Elizabeth’s passing in September 2022 at the age of 96.
Queen Elizabeth’s Driving Passion
Cohen described Queen Elizabeth as both “shy” and “gutsy.” She remembered how the queen enjoyed driving cars around Balmoral Castle, her beloved residence in Scotland. According to Cohen, the queen loved the thrill of driving fast, often taking her family members along during their summer visits.
Cohen explained that hosting family at Balmoral was important to the queen. She enjoyed making arrangements for their stays and would personally check on them. The queen was known for her playful side, and her aides often saw her in action, whether it was driving her car or riding her horse.

Cohen recalled that her children would sometimes see the queen while playing outside. “Some mornings, I’d be getting breakfast, and my kids would shout, ‘Mum! The Queen just rode past on her horse!’” This shows how approachable and down-to-earth Queen Elizabeth was despite her royal status.
Cohen also mentioned that the queen was thoughtful and caring, choosing Christmas gifts and writing personal cards for her family and staff. Although their relationship was filled with light-hearted moments, Cohen always maintained a deep respect for the queen.
As we remember Queen Elizabeth, it’s clear that her spirit and love for life left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
