Mallika Sherawat recently shared her childhood experiences, revealing the challenges she faced as a girl in a traditional family. In a heartfelt interview, she opened up about how her birth brought disappointment to her family. Instead of celebrating her arrival, her family felt sadness, and her mother struggled with depression after she was born. Mallika highlighted that, in many families like hers, daughters are often seen as a burden.
Mallika Sherawat’s Family Struggles
During her interview, Mallika stated, “When I was born, there was mourning in my family.” She explained how this reaction reflects deep-rooted societal beliefs that favor sons over daughters. Her family viewed girls as liabilities, believing they would eventually get married and leave home, which made them less worthy of support and education.

Mallika also discussed the favoritism shown towards her brother, who received more attention and resources for his education. She expressed sadness over the unequal treatment, saying, “All the family’s wealth will go to the son.” This favoritism left a mark on her childhood, as she often felt misunderstood and unsupported.
Despite the challenges she faced, Mallika recognized that her struggles were not unique. Many girls in her village experienced similar discrimination. This realization fueled her determination to challenge these societal norms. She emphasized that women can also perpetuate these biases and that changing perceptions requires support among women.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Mallika mentioned that while her parents provided her with a good education, they didn’t encourage her interests, particularly her love for sports. She had to pursue sports secretly, fearing that her family would think it made her too masculine and harm her marriage prospects.
Today, Mallika is returning to the screen in the film “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video,” co-starring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri. The film marks a significant moment in her career, and she hopes to inspire change through her work.
