The 50th season of Saturday Night Live kicked off with a special episode featuring actress Jean Smart and singer Jelly Roll. One of the episode’s highlights was the Weekend Update segment, hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, where they joked about Hoda Kotb leaving the Today show.

During the segment, Jost jokingly said that Kotb would be resigning from her job on the Today show… where she is depicted holding a wine glass. He then joked that she would be replaced by Matt Lauer, who lost his job at the show in 2017 due to sexual misconduct. Larry made the audience laugh when he complemented Lauer with a joke that had a picture of the comedian wearing a wig.

There was a little bonus for the audience – Jean Smart was joined by her Hacks collaborator, Hannah Einbinder. They both came back to showcase the musical performing artist of the event, Jelly Roll, who presented songs off his new album Beautifully Broken. This was such a special night for Jelly Roll, it was his first time gracing the stage of SNL.

Alongside the special guests, SNL brought some changes to the cast list and added some new faces during the start of the season: Emil Wakim, Ashley Padilla, Jane Wickline. At the same time, during the comedy escalator, cast members Marcello Hernández, Devon Walker, and Michael Longfellow were promoted to main cast.

While some artists such as Punkie Johnson, Chloe Troast, Molly Kearney have left the show, the new season promises to be as funny and full of new talents and interesting guests.
