Chhaya Kadam is feeling both happy and a bit disappointed. Her movie Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, which is a huge honor. At the same time, her other film All We Imagine As Light was not selected, despite being highly praised and even shortlisted by France for the Oscars. All We Imagine As Light is directed by Payal Kapadia and has already won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, which makes the absence from the Oscars bittersweet for Chhaya.
Chhaya Kadam’s Oscar Journey
In a recent interview with India Today, Chhaya expressed her mixed emotions. She said, “I am very happy and excited that Laapataa Ladies was selected for the Oscars. But I also feel a little sad for All We Imagine As Light because it’s such an important film. I would have loved to see both movies compete at the Oscars.”

Chhaya Kadam is currently in Paris for a special screening of All We Imagine As Light. She praised both films and expressed her respect for the decision made by the Film Federation of India.
In Laapataa Ladies, Chhaya plays the role of Manju Maai, a woman running a tea stall at a railway station. The movie, directed by Kiran Rao, features stars like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav. The film is produced by Jio Studios and Aamir Khan Productions and is available to watch on Netflix.
All We Imagine As Light is another remarkable film that tells the story of two Malayali nurses living in Mumbai. It made history as the first Indian film directed by an Indian woman in 30 years to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s main competition. The last time an Indian film competed at Cannes was in 1994. Chhaya Kadam’s role as Parvaty in this film has received much appreciation for its depth and authenticity.
In the end, while Chhaya is thrilled for the success of Laapataa Ladies, she remains proud of both films and their journeys, showcasing the diversity and talent of Indian cinema.
