Remembering Mohammad Shafi Pandit: Kashmir’s First Muslim IAS Officer and Civil Society Leader dies at 80

Mohammad Shafi Pandit, the first Muslim IAS officer from Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Thursday at the age of 80 after a brief illness. He was a well-respected bureaucrat known for his integrity and commitment to public service.

Born and raised in Kashmir, Pandit completed his Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Kashmir. In 1969, he made history by becoming the first Muslim from Jammu and Kashmir to qualify for the civil services exam, achieving an impressive 5th rank. He later pursued a postgraduate degree in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesota in the United States.

Throughout his career, Pandit held several important positions and retired as the Additional Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. He also served as the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) from 2004 to 2009. After retiring, he dedicated himself to coaching civil service aspirants in the Valley by founding the Ascent Group.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Srinagar for an election rally, paid tribute to Pandit, acknowledging his contributions to society. “He worked for the benefit of society even after his retirement,” Modi said, expressing condolences to Pandit’s family.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, praised Pandit for his significant contributions to public service. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh described him as a role model for the youth in the Valley, highlighting his gentle nature and dedication to civil society.

Pandit’s legacy will live on through his many contributions to the community and the inspiration he provided to future generations in Jammu and Kashmir.
