Punjab Pension Scheme: The Social Security, Women, and Child Development Department in Punjab has recovered Rs 145.73 crore that was previously given to 2.44 lakh ineligible or deceased people under the state pension scheme. This recovery follows a detailed survey conducted to verify the eligibility of pension beneficiaries across the state.

Dr. Baljit Kaur, the Minister of Social Security, Women, and Child Development, stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that pensions are given only to those who are truly eligible. She highlighted that the government’s priority is to make sure that the pension funds are used properly and reach those who need them the most.

During the current financial year (2024-25), the state government has disbursed Rs 2,505.52 crore to 33.58 lakh beneficiaries under the pension scheme. The scheme provides a monthly pension of Rs 1,500 to the elderly, widows, dependent children, and people with disabilities.
The survey for the 2022-23 financial year found that around 1.23 lakh ineligible or deceased people had received pensions, resulting in the recovery of Rs 77.91 crore. In the 2023-24 financial year, another 1.07 lakh such beneficiaries were identified, leading to a recovery of Rs 41.22 crore.
So far in the 2024-25 financial year (as of July 2024), Rs 26.59 crore has been recovered from 14,160 ineligible or deceased beneficiaries.
These efforts by the Punjab government aim to ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution of pension funds, making sure that only deserving individuals receive financial support.
