Jana Kramer Criticizes Blake Lively's It Ends With Us Messaging: A Focus on Domestic Violence

Jana Kramer has recently criticized Blake Lively’s new film It Ends With Us, arguing that the movie’s messaging might overlook the impact of domestic violence. Jana Kramer Criticizes It Ends With Us

In her podcast, Jana Kramer, who has firsthand experience with domestic violence, expressed her disappointment with the film’s portrayal of abuse. She addressed Lively’s comments from a BBC News interview, where Lively stated that her character, Lily Bloom, is not “defined by” the abuse she suffered. Kramer disagreed, saying, “For people to say it doesn’t define you, it does define you. It has made me who I am.”

Kramer believes that domestic violence is a significant part of a survivor’s identity and should be the main focus of discussions about the film. She stressed that the film’s marketing, which she felt portrayed it more like a romantic comedy, did not align with the serious subject matter of domestic violence.

Jana Kramer’s critique is informed by her own past. She suffered abuse during her marriage to Michael Gambino, who was later convicted of attempted murder and died by suicide in 2012. This personal history shapes her view that domestic violence is a defining experience for survivors, and she wishes the film would emphasize this aspect more.

The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us has faced criticism for various reasons. Some fans and critics have pointed out that the marketing seems to downplay the serious themes of the book, focusing instead on romantic elements. Additionally, there has been controversy over Lively’s promotion of the film alongside her business ventures, which some felt was insensitive given the film’s subject matter.

There have also been rumors of tension between Lively and her co-stars, which led actor Brandon Sklenar to defend his colleagues on social media. Sklenar emphasized that the negative publicity was distracting from the film’s core message about domestic violence.

Blake Lively has not publicly addressed the ongoing controversy. Meanwhile, the discussion continues about how best to represent and address domestic violence in media and ensure that the focus remains on helping survivors and raising awareness.
