Bill Skarsgård’s Transformation for The Crow
Bill Skarsgård, who is 34 years old, explained that achieving the right look for The Crow was a delicate balance. He needed to be in top shape but did not want to become excessively muscular. The goal was to have a physique that fit the character without going overboard. Skarsgård said, “I’d already been training for quite a while. Me and my trainer kept adding a little bit of weight onto what I’d already be, but I didn’t want to be too big either.”
He compared the challenge to the “Clark Kent and Superman dilemma,” where the transformation needed to be noticeable but not extreme. Bill Skarsgård emphasized that while the character should not be thin, achieving the right look required careful weight training and a protein-rich diet.
To meet his fitness goals, Bill Skarsgård followed a strict diet and exercise routine. He engaged in intense weight training and consumed a lot of protein to build muscle. Director Rupert Sanders noted Skarsgård’s dedication, humorously mentioning that while the crew indulged in burgers and hot dogs, Skarsgård was committed to a healthier diet.
Sanders even supported Bill Skarsgård diet by joining him for meals. He would often order the same dishes as Skarsgård, which included steak tartare and raw eggs. Despite the rigorous diet, Skarsgård enjoyed the food and did not feel the need to cheat. He avoided sugar but did not miss sweets. To celebrate completing filming, he treated himself to a beer.
Rupert Sanders, the director of The Crow, shared his vision for the film, focusing on creating a “dark romance” that explores themes of grief and loss. Sanders wanted to portray the “ethereal veil between life and death” and how characters reach through that veil.
Sanders also acknowledged the tragic history of the original The Crow film, which starred Brandon Lee, who died in an on-set accident. He mentioned that this tragedy was considered during the production of the reboot and that Skarsgård felt like a successor to Lee’s role.
