Stree 2 Review: A Technical Triumph with Shraddha and Rajkummar, but Burdened by a Forced Universe

The sequel Stree 2 directed by Amar Kaushik with Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao coming back repeats the plot of the original film. While heroic and adding more of everything from visuals to plot in the sequel, this one fails at staking out its universe and writing.

Stree 2 Plot Summary

Stree 2 is the direct sequel to the first feature film Stree. Unlike the original, the sequel is located in Chanderi and a new ghost, Sar-Kata, takes the women with progressive thoughts. Vicky and his friends get together to take on the ‘bad guy’, Sar-Kata, played by Sushant Singh. They get help from a woman (Shraddha Kapoor) with whom Vicky has feelings for. The movie looks at if they are able to overpower the ghost, and what becomes of their town into the future?

What Works

  • Visual Effects: The film features impressive visual effects that enhance the story.
  • Comedy: Some comedy scenes are genuinely funny and enjoyable.
  • Cameos: The movie includes surprise appearances that add to the excitement.
  • Music: The songs are good, and their presentation is well done.

What Doesn’t Work

  • Comedy: The humor is inconsistent. The film focuses more on the new ghost rather than Shraddha Kapoor’s character, which might disappoint fans.
  • Plot and Writing: The film can feel slow, especially in the second half. The effort to create a larger movie universe seems forced, and adding new characters does not always fit well.
  • Performances:
    • Shraddha Kapoor’s performance feels mechanical and unremarkable.
    • Rajkummar Rao’s acting is okay but sometimes overdone. His monologues can be tiring.
    • Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurana perform well.
    • Abhishek Banerjee’s role feels unnatural.
    • Tamannaah Bhatia stands out in her short role.

Final Verdict

Stree 2 is great visuals, especially the effects as well as some fine humor. But when it comes to humor it is very inconsistent and tries too hard to create a cinematic universe. However, yes it has all these drawbacks, it is entertaining and it is good to be watchful for its graphics and comics and hey… the actors.
