Aemond Targaryen, a major character in “House of the Dragon,” has captured viewers’ attention with his ruthless and ambitious nature. As the series progresses, fans are eager to know how his story ends, especially considering his growing role as one of the show’s key villains. For those who have read George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the answer to Aemond’s fate is already known, though the television adaptation might take some creative liberties.

Aemond Targaryen Role in the War
In the second season of “House of the Dragon,” Aemond Targaryen takes a central role in the brewing conflict between the Targaryen factions. His half-sister, Rhaenyra, who believes she is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, stands in opposition to Aemond’s brother, Aegon II. Aemond himself becomes a driving force in the war, leading the Greens, a faction supporting Aegon II, against Rhaenyra and her supporters.
The series depicts Aemond as a calculating and fearless warrior, with his actions pushing his family deeper into conflict. Despite his efforts, he faces significant challenges, particularly when Rhaenyra strengthens her position by recruiting additional dragons.
The Battle Above the God’s Eye
In the book Fire & Blood, Aemond’s story reaches its climax during the Battle Above the God’s Eye, a significant and tragic event in the Targaryen civil war, also known as the Dance of the Dragons. This battle is set above a large lake near Harrenhal, a location steeped in Westerosi history.
Aemond, riding the formidable dragon Vhagar, engages in a fierce aerial battle with Daemon Targaryen, who rides the dragon Caraxes. Vhagar is the largest and most powerful dragon in Westeros, but Caraxes is known for his speed and ferocity. The battle is intense, with both dragons and riders displaying incredible skill and bravery.
Aemond Targaryen Death
During the battle, Caraxes latches onto Vhagar, allowing Daemon to get close to Aemond. In a dramatic moment, Daemon leaps from Caraxes onto Vhagar and attacks Aemond directly. He drives his sword, Dark Sister, through Aemond’s eye—the same eye he had lost earlier in his life, which had been replaced with a sapphire. This fatal blow ends Aemond’s life instantly.
Both dragons, locked in a deadly embrace, fall from the sky and crash into the waters of the God’s Eye below. The impact is catastrophic, and the bodies of the dragons and their riders are lost in the lake’s depths.
Differences in the Show
While Fire & Blood provides a detailed account of Aemond’s death, the show “House of the Dragon” has made some changes to the original story. While it is expected that the major events, like the Battle Above the God’s Eye, will remain largely the same, the show might delay or alter some aspects to fit the narrative structure and pacing of the series. This could mean that Aemond’s death might not occur exactly as it does in the book, or it could be postponed to a later season to extend the conflict and character arcs.
